What is Direct Routing for Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams is a business communication platform that offers workspace chat and video conferencing, file storage, VoIP calling, and application integration. MS Teams also provides a phone option where one can make and receive calls through the application itself.

There are two ways to activate this feature: either by using the Microsoft Phone System with calling plans (which is a costlier option) or by using the Microsoft Phone System with direct routing (the better and the cost-effective option!).

Enabling Direct routing for MS Teams helps you manage the connection between your on-premise SIP Trunk or PSTN solution and Microsoft Phone system to give you a better calling experience.

How does Direct Routing work?
Microsoft Calling plans vs. Falkon VoIP Direct routing.png

Enabling Direct routing for Microsoft Teams allows your organization to connect with external phone lines. Essentially, you can leverage Microsoft Teams to make and receive phone calls outside your organization using SIP trunks to route the calls! In Microsoft calling plans, Microsoft provides phone numbers and also PSTN services. In Direct routing, you connect your existing PSTN to Teams via a Session Border Controller (SBC) and SIP Trunks.

What do I need to get started?

You would be needing a Microsoft Office 365 License that includes a phone system (E1/E3 + Phone System or E5) along with a Microsoft certified SBC, a SIP Provider, and an E911 provider. We will handle the rest!
